The TNA World Heavyweight Championship is a professional wrestling world heavyweight championship contested for in the Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA) promotion. After the formation of TNA in June 2002, the company executives signed a contractual agreement with the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) that allowed them control of the NWA World Heavyweight and World Tag Team Championships. TNA subsequently changed their name to NWA–TNA, making them an official subsidiary of the NWA in the process.
Being a professional wrestling championship, it is won via a scripted ending to a match or awarded to a wrestler because of a storyline. All title changes have occurred at TNA-promoted events; reigns that occurred on Impact!, usually aired on tape delay and as such are listed with the day the tapings occurred, rather than the air date. Angle holds the record for most reigns, with four. At days, Kevin McAlmond's only reign is the longest in the title's history. Angle's first reign holds the record for shortest reign in the title's history at one day. Cting is the current champion, in his third reign. He defeated Josh Hooper on February 24, 2011 at the tapings of the March 3 episode of Impact! to win the title. Overall, there have been 14 reigns shared among eight wrestlers, with two vacancies.
