SummerSlam (2010) was a professional wrestling pay-per-view event produced by International Wrestling Entertainment (IWE), that took place on August 15, 2010 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California for the second consecutive year. It was the 23rd annual SummerSlam event and six matches took place

Background

SummerSlam will feature wrestling matches involving different wrestlers from pre-existing feuds, plots, and storylines that will be played out on International Wrestling Entertainent's (IWE) television programs. Wrestlers will portray Heel or Face as they follow a series of events that build tension, and culminate into a wrestling match or series of matches.

The main Feud heading into SummerSlam from the Meltdown brand is between the champion Garrett Joseph and Kevin McAlmond over the IWE Championship. At IWE Fatal Four Way in June, Garrett Joseph defeated the then-champion Dustin Simpson, Chris Gomez and McAlmond in a [[Fatal Four Way Match] to win the IWE title after an interference from The Nexus. In July, at IWE Money in the Bank, Garrett Joseph successfully defended the IWE Championship against Dustin Simpson in a Steel Cage match, due to an interference from The Nexus again. Then, on the July 19 episode of Meltdown, Kevin McAlmond defeated Chris Gomez and Kris McGowan in a Triple Threat Match to earn the right to face Garrett Joseph for the IWE Championship at SummerSlam. On the August 9 edition of Meltdown, the anonymous general manager of Meltdown added two stipulations to the match: should anyone interfere in this match, then he, she or they would be Suspended indefinitely from the IWE; and also, should Kevin McAlmond lose, He would not receive another title shot at the IWE Championship and go to the back of the line of challengers for the title.

Another major rivalry from Meltdown features The Nexus, a Stable consisting of former IWE NXT "rookies" of season one and led by the season's winner Daniel Gonzalez, against "Team IWE", led by Dustin Simpson. The Nexus made their debut as a collective unit on the June 7 edition of Meltdown, attacking Dustin Simpson, Justin Eldridge, and members of the ringside crew, on the pretext of demanding guaranteed IWE contracts for all of them. Next week on Meltdown, after the then-General Manager and Brett Hart refused, and fired Gonzalez, The Nexus attacked him later that night, incapacitating him, and forcing IWE Chairman Richard Lehr next week to appoint a new, "anonymous" general manager for Meltdown, who ultimately signed all members of The Nexus to the show. But even after their demands were met with, The Nexus continued to frequently attacked various IWE Superstars, crew, and Legends to display their "dominance", focusing mainly on targeting Dustin Simpson, and cost him the IWE Championship twice. On the July 19 episode of Meltdown, Dustin Simpson confronted The Nexus, who offered him a place in their stable, which he refused and instead revealed that he had assembled a team, christened as "Team IWE" (consisting of Dustin Simpson himself, Chris Gomez, Kris McGowan, Joe Linderman, Blake Wheeler, Reg Hageman, and Bret Hart), to face The Nexus in a Seven on Seven Tag Team Match at SummerSlam. On the July 26 edition of Meltdown, the "anonymous" general manager changed the match to an Elimination Format, instead of one fall to the finish. But following some dissension from members on Dustin Simpson's team in the next few weeks, Chris Gomez and Kris McGowan left the SummerSlam match, following their losses to Daniel Gonzalez and Dustin Simpson, respectively on the August 2 episode of Meltdown. However, on the August 9 episode of Meltdown, Chris Gomez and Kris McGowan rejoined "Team IWE" after The Nexus tried to attack the members of their opposing team at SummerSlam, and the former two made the save. Also, on the same night, Reg Hageman was attacked and taken out of action for SummerSlam by The Nexus, and Joe Smith offered his services to the team as Reg Hagemans's substitute, ultimately saying he would reveal his final decision at SummerSlam itself.

The main rivalry heading into SummerSlam from the Fusion brand is between the champion Chris LeGreca and Scott Wright over the IWE World Heavyweight Championship. On the May 28 episode of Fusion, Chris LeGreca's (kayfabe) brother, Martin McAlmond returned to the IWE and defeated Scott Wright to qualify for the Fatal Four-Way Match for the IWE World Heavyweight Championship at the IWE Fatal 4-Way pay-per-view in June. But during the match, Martin McAlmond suffered a Legitimate injury, forcing him out of the Fatal 4-Way event and hence, his absence was Written Out by having him found in a "vegetative state" by Chris LeGreca over the Memorial Day weekend. This "incident" led Chris LeGreca accusing and attacking several IWE Superstars for incapacitating his brother. Meanwhile, on the June 4 episode of Fusion, Scott Wright won a Battle Royal to replace Martin McAlmond, and went on to defeat the defending champion Charlie Wilson, The Big Marc and Justin Eldridge at IWE Fatal 4-Way to win the IWE World Heavyweight Championship. At the IWE Money in the Bank pay-per-view, after Scott Wright defeated Charlie Wilson retain the title, Chris LeGreca, who had won the Fusion Money in the Bank Ladder Match earlier that night, chased Charlie Wilson out of the arena for attacking Scott Wright, and then returned to the ring, cashed-in his Money in the Bank contract and Quickly Defeated Scott Wright to win the IWE World Heavyweight Championship. On the July 23 edition of Fusion, Scott Wright defeated Charlie Wilson in a 2 Out Of 3 Falls Match to earn the right to face Chris LeGreca for the World title at SummerSlam. On the July 30 episode of Fusion, Chris LeGreca revealed that Martin McAlmond had disclosed that his attacker was Scott Wright. For this, Chris LeGreca threatened to make Scott Wright "cease to exist."

Another rivalry from the Fusion brand pits The Big Marc against the S.E.S, a stable preaching the Hardlined Straight Edge Lifestyle, led by Justin Eldridge and consisting of Justin Feight, Joey Hayes and Kelsey Carter. At the IWE Over the Limit pay-per-view in May, Justin Eldridge lost a match to Scott Wright, in which the latter's pledge to the S.E.S. was on the line Against Justin's Hair, and as a result, Justin Eldridge had his head shaved bald. In order to conceal his baldness, Justin Eldirdge started wearing a mask in the upcoming weeks. But on the July 16 edition of Fusion, The Big Marc removed Justin Eldridge's mask, revealing his bald head to the world. Next week on Fusion, in order to avenge Justin Eldridge's humiliation, the S.E.S.'s masked "mystery man" competed against The Big Marc in a losing cause, and during the match, had his own mask removed by the latter as well, unveiling himself to be Joey Hayes. The S.E.S. finally got their revenge on the July 30 edition of Fusion when they attacked The Big Marc and repeatedly stomped on his right hand into the steel ring steps. Then on the August 6 edition of Fusion, it was announced that Justin Eldridge, Justin Feight and Joey Hayes of the S.E.S. will face The Big Marc in a 3-on-1 Handicap Match at SummerSlam.

Another rivalry from the Meltdown brand is between the champion Kassie Austin and Denise Lynn over the IWE Divas Championship. In December 2009, Denise Lynn tore her ACL at a Live Event, which caused her to Vacate the Divas Championship. At IWE Fatal 4-Way in June, Alicia won the title in a Fatal Four-Way match, also featuring the then-champion Nicole Bergman, Ashley Martin and Lauren Ireland, and retained the championship against Nicole Bergman at IWE Money in the Bank. On the August 2 edition of Meltdown, Denise Lynn made her return and attacked Kassi Austin. The following week on Meltdown, Denise Lynn defeated Kassi Austin in a non-title match and was rewarded with an title opportunity at the Divas Championship at SummerSlam.
