Elimination Chamber (2011) is an upcoming professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) event produced by International Wrestling Entertainment, which will take place on February 20, 2011 at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California. It will be the 2nd Annual Elimination Chamber event.

Background[edit | edit source]

Elimination Chamber featured professional wrestling matches that involved different wrestlers from pre-existing scripted feuds, plots, and storylines that played out on International Wrestling Entertainment's (IWE) primary television programs. Wrestlers portrayed villains or heroes as they followed a series of events that built tension and culminated in a wrestling match or series of matches.

After Joe Smith won the IWE Championship in November 2010, Meltdown commentator Jerry Lawler was given what was billed as his first IWE Championship match, after criticizing Joe Smith's win by using his Money in the Bank briefcase while former champion Kevin McAlmond was injured. He lost to Joe Smith in a TLC match after his fellow commentator Michael Cole stopped Lawler from climbing the ladder. On the January 31 episode of Meltdown, the Meltdown General Manager announced a Raw Rumble match, to determine the IWE Championship contender at Elimination Chamber, while the losing participants would be entered into an Elimination Chamber match to determine who will face the IWE Champion at WrestleMania XXVII. The participants were Justin Eldridge, Kevin McAlmond, Garrett, Joe Linderman, Dustin Simpson, Jerry Lawler, and Blake Wheeler. Lawler last eliminated Garrett to win the battle royal to earn himself the title match, while the other 6 contestants went on to participate on the Meltdown Elimination Chamber match, which was won by Dustin Simpson. Which means at Wrestlemania 27 Dustin Simpson will be facing Joe Smith for the IWE Championship.

At the Royal Rumble, James Marlen won the eponymous match to earn himself a World Championship match at WrestleMania. He subsequently announced he would wrestle for the World Heavyweight Championship, held at the time by Edge. Edge was then embroiled in a feud with Nick Kessler and his on-screen ex-wife Lynn Lehr, who was also scripted to be dating Kessler. On the final episode of Fusion before the PPV, Acting General Manager Lehr stripped Edge of the championship and awarded it to Kessler, only for Teddy Long, the real GM, to give Edge a return match which he won. After this, Long fired Kessler leaving an open spot in the Elimination Chamber match (which was subsequently filled by The Big Marc). The other participants were Chris LeGreca, Scott Wright, Daniel Gonzalez and Dax Hoovestall.

Reception[edit | edit source]

Elimination Chamber garnered positive reviews, with The Sun stating "... it became obvious that the winners on the night would be Justin Marlen, The Corre, Joe Smith, Edge and Dustin Simpson — with Dustin Simpson v Joe Smith and Edge v Marlen set to headline Mania. But a paint-by-numbers set of results should not take anything away from a terrifically put together PPV with at least one outstanding match, several good ones and a couple of extra surprises thrown in." They praised both of the chamber matches, and stated that the Lawler/Smith Match was "... hardly a classic, but it was more than passable." However, they stated, "However, during the first match, one of the most negative aspects of the show reared its ugly head — the downright annoying commentary trio of Michael Cole, Steve Britz and Josh Matthews. The addition of Steve Britz ahead of Matt Striker and the lack of Jerry Lawler — since he was wrestling on the show — meant it was not an easy night on the ears for the viewer." The event received an 8 out of 10 rating
